Orator (“the app”, “we”, “us”) is a speaking-practice app provided by Boxed Up. We built Orator to be private by default: your practice recordings stay on your device, and we do not run user accounts. To keep the app sustainable we advertise it, and we measure how those ads perform — this involves limited advertising and analytics partners, which you can opt out of at any time (see “Advertising and measurement” below). This policy explains what data the app handles and the cases where information is shared with the services that make the app work.
When you practice, Orator records short audio/video takes and generates a transcript and delivery metrics (such as words per minute, filler-word counts, pauses, and vocal energy). It also stores your progress through the 30-day program. This information is stored locally on your device and is not uploaded to us.
Practice recordings are saved in the app’s private storage on your device. We do not have a server that receives or stores your videos, and we cannot access them. Deleting a recording, restarting the challenge, or uninstalling the app removes them.
To transcribe your practice, Orator uses Apple’s Speech framework. Depending on your device, language, and network conditions, the audio may be transcribed on your device or sent to Apple for processing. This is handled by Apple and is subject to Apple’s Privacy Policy. We do not receive a copy of the audio through this process.
If you request AI coaching on a practice session, the transcript of that session and the computed delivery metrics are transmitted to Anthropic, PBC, our AI provider, to generate written feedback. This text is used only to produce your coaching response. We do not send your name or contact details, and your video and audio files are never sent. Anthropic’s handling of API data is governed by its own privacy terms. If you never request AI coaching, no practice data leaves your device for this purpose.
Purchases are processed by Apple through the App Store; we never see or receive your payment details. We use RevenueCat to manage subscriptions and unlock access. RevenueCat receives a randomly generated app-user identifier together with purchase and receipt information and basic device/platform details in order to validate your subscription. This identifier is not linked to your real-world identity.
We promote Orator through advertising on Meta (Facebook and Instagram) and TikTok. To understand which campaigns are effective, the app uses the Meta and TikTok software development kits (SDKs) to report a limited set of app events — such as opening the app, completing onboarding, starting a free trial, and subscribing — to those partners. Where a subscription event happens outside the app (for example when a free trial converts to paid, or a subscription renews), our subscription provider RevenueCat also reports that event to these partners on our behalf.
These events may be sent together with device identifiers, including your device’s Identifier for Advertisers (IDFA), so the partners can measure and improve ad performance. On Apple devices this is “tracking,” so the app first shows Apple’s App Tracking Transparency prompt and only uses the IDFA if you allow it. You can decline, and you can change your choice at any time in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Tracking. If you decline, we do not use your IDFA, and measurement is limited to Apple’s privacy-preserving SKAdNetwork. We do not share your practice recordings, transcripts, name, email, or phone number with these partners.
If you turn on practice reminders, Orator schedules local notifications on your device. These are generated on-device and are not sent through our servers.
Orator has no user accounts and does not ask for your name, email, or phone number to use the app. We do not sell or rent your information, and we do not share your practice recordings, transcripts, or contact details with advertisers. The only data shared for advertising is the limited app-event and device-identifier information described in “Advertising and measurement” above.
Because your practice data lives on your device, you control it. Use “Restart challenge” in Profile to clear your progress and analysis, delete individual recordings, or uninstall the app to remove everything associated with it.
Orator is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children.
We may update this policy as the app evolves. Material changes will be reflected here with an updated date, and within the app.
